Nonouti Island - Kiribati
The Nonouti Project - Exploratory # 3

Rob Bonefish23rd May to 2nd June 2010

Here is your opportunity to come and join us on a trip to an exciting new fishery!

The dates have been set so that we will be fishing during the full moon, giving us the best opportunity of finding spawning aggregations of bonefish. As of yet we have only found one spawning aggregation but this is because we have not been there for the entire full moon and have always left to come home just as the fishing was hotting up!

The guides I have selected are unbelievable fisherman in their own right and now understand that we wish to find fish in less than knee deep water. They proved this on the last three days of the last trip when they took us to an area called Namon Buni, which means "Lake of the Pufferfish". It was here that we found good quantities of tailing and finning bonefish. Perfect fly rodding targets!! During these three days of fishing the guides realized the potential of other areas very similar to this flat we were fishing! These are the areas that we will be fishing!

Giant TrevallyThere are plenty of other opportunities fishing in the form of GT’s, Bluefin Trevally, and a myriad of other species that I do not even know the names of!

You can check out the last two exploratory trips by going to the BLOG.

The Island Council has allowed me to come with 4 anglers; there are only 3 places left. So if you want to be one of the first people to set foot on these amazing flats, contact us ASAP!

The Nonouti Project - Exploratory # 2

Nonouti IslandEXPLORATION OF NORTH EASTERN & SOUTH WESTERN PASSES

After going in last month I had a much better understanding of the lay of the land so to speak. With all good flats fishing it is paramount importance to know depth and geography of a particular flat to be able to predict where and when you may see fish in the shallows feeding.

It’s also necessary to work out the direction the fish will travel in relation to the direction of the visibility on a flat at a particular time of day and tide height.

For example, on this flat we found to fish one section we needed to be there in the morning on an incoming tide and another section for the last of the run up and another place when the tide turned off high. Knowing tide height etc made it possible here to get Bonefish on most stages of the tide on the same flat complex.

Learn from the Law?

BonefishThere were a lot of things that were enjoyable about being able to get to Nonouti but the most memorable was being invited to go traditional fishing with Kairiata (the Nonouti Island Magistrate) in his traditional outrigger canoe.

The guys dropped me off at Kairiata’s place and we headed out to a flat that he fishes regularly and he promised that later in the day part of the flat would be shallow enough to wade.

We had a great day and it further proved to me that this fishery is everything we’d heard it was.

Kiribati Tourism Office Report

Our recent trip has received a lot of press and attention, both here in Australia and in Kiribati.

The Kiribati National Tourism Office had this to say in their recent newsletter:

Famil Tour to Nonouti
The KNTO in conjunction with Australian based salt water fly fishing company “Tie and Fly Outfitters” undertook an eight day ‘exploratory’ trip to the island of Nonouti in the Gilbert Islands to ascertain whether the island would for recreational ‘bone fishing’ similar to Kiritimati Island. The group of Australian’s headed by Tie n Fly’s managing director and internationally recognized fly fishing guide, Capt Gavin Platz saw first hand the potential Nonouti has a recreation fishing destination.

We are very proud to have been selected by the Kiribati Government to partner with them on this exciting project.

The next few groups that we take in with us will also be “exploratory” trips – there are acres of flats to explore and document… not to mention the coral bombies and the GT potential!

If you have a spirit of exploration and adventure, enjoy discovering a new culture and people – then this may be the trip for you!

The Nonouti Project - Exploratory # 1

BonefishWe were very excited when the Kiribati National Tourism Office approached Gavin in mid-2009 about the possibility of a new bonefish on fly destination in the Republic of Kiribati.

The region is already world famous for Kiritimati (Christmas) Island as a premier bonefish and giant trevally hot spot, so the opportunity to explore the raw potential of Nonouti Island was just too tempting.

After several phone & email conversations and a couple of meetings with the delegates from the Tourism Office, it was all set that we would visit at the end of January 2010 over the full moon. There was too much fun to be had for Gavin to go by himself, so I joined him along with our good friends and clients - Benn, Cameron & Mark.

We had no idea what we would find on the island... we knew it was very remote... we knew the accommodations were pretty basic (what a surprise we got when we arrived!)... and we had no idea about the boat situation...

PS - these are the "KiaKia" we slept in - very cool and comfortable - and they built them especially for us!
