Fishing Report - Kuala Rompin

Our boat captain in Rompin sent us an email with some info from the start of the season:

With the fish coming on the bite only late in the afternoon. it made for a good weekend.
Good number of fish raised in a short period of time. Not big fish but very aggressive.

SailfishSAILFISH ON FLY - KUALA ROMPIN IN 2010

Sailfish on Fly - arguably, the most exciting way to catch a Sailfish!

Kuala Rompin has an annual migration of Sailfish that has to be seen to be believed. There are only a handful of places in the world where the Sailfish congregate in such great numbers. Still relatively unknown, this is the ultimate destination to fulfil your dream of landing a Sailfish.The strike rate is comparable to and if not better than other hotspots around the world but it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

The blue/green waters are generally calm, making ideal conditions for fly casting. I visited in October 2009 and found them in schools, sipping anchovies off the surface like a Brown Trout sipping dries.

We have secured the services of a very experienced local skipper, who will troll to tease up the fish to casting range. All teasing equipment is supplied and all stitch baits will be prepared for you. We guarantee you a full days trolling/teasing should you book a fly fishing charter with us.

A common by-catch would include Spanish Mackeral and Cobia. There is also a mix of Trevallys, Tuskfish, Barracuda, Queenfish and the odd juvenile Black Marlin. Although not in large sizes, the Mahi Mahis are around from May till August and can be prolific at times.

The dates:

29 August 2010 - 4 September 2010

5 September 2010 - 11 September 2010

The package:

AUD$3,995 per person

Prices are based on groups of three anglers.
The price is based on an exchange rate of 1 AUD=1.25 SGD and are subject to a surcharge should the exchange rate change.

Included in the package is:

  • transfers to and from Singapore hotel/airport to your accommodation in Kuala Rompin;
  • 5 days fully guided fly fishing with experienced boat captain;
  • all meals while in Kuala Rompin - breakfast daily; packed lunch on board the vessel including snacks and softdrinks; dinner in the local restaurants each night;
  • 6 nights shared accommodation in Kuala Rompin in a newly built private unit with air-conditioning, ensuite bathrooms, water heater, cable TV, tea & coffee making facilities.

The above prices are ex-Singapore.

Not included in the package:

  • Hotel accommodation in Singapore;
  • Alcohol and items of a personal nature.

Kuala RompinAbout Kuala Rompin:

This small town in the state of Pahang lies just north of the Endau River on the East Coast of the Malaysian peninsula. There are all the basic amenities in Rompin. There is a small supermarket serving the local community selling most sundries along with a daily market. There are also quite a few shops selling other general items. Depending on traffic conditions, it is approximately three and a half hours from Singapore. The restaurants of Kuala Rompin are famous for their seafood, especially for their freshwater prawns and freshwater clam caught in the surrounding areas especially at the estuary of Sungai Rompin (Rompin River). Crabs and squids are also popular.

Why not combine this trip with a Singapore stop over for a few days - it is an ideal way for anglers to combine traveling with friends or family, and adds further options to the adventure.

If you’d like to join us then please send us an email or phone us at the shop - 07 5444 0611.

Places are limited and the season is short - our skipper books solid every season.

We love to have you join us and if you’ve never seen or caught a Sailfish then this is the trip for you...

Cheers,
Gavin

Kuala Rompin

SailfishWhenever we come across a fly fishing destination that we feel that our clients will enjoy, Gavin always goes there to fish it and experience what the place has to offer before we offer it to you guys.

One such place that caught Gavin's interest is Kuala Rompin in Malaysia.

There is a congregation of Sailfish in these waters each year that has to be seen to be believed...

Gavin went to check it out in October 2009 - here is his report.

Kuala Rompin - October 2009

Kuala Rompin
Malaysia - 2009

I started my trip by going to Darwin with Judy to hangout with friends Leigh, Wayne, Jacob and Finn for few days, just to travel around and see the place as we’ve never been to Darwin before.

We also called into the Boat Show and caught up with Matt Henger and the Darwin Flyrodders Club. The Club had a stand at the show and were sharing their knowledge about fly fishing. It was great to see the enthusiasm of the members, their passion for the sport really comes through.

After a hectic time eating and drinking our way around Darwin I said goodbye to Judy and headed off to the airport to join up with Matt and head for Singapore to catch up with Sean (our team leader) then be joined by Kjell, Mark and Jeff.

At last we get to our accommodation and meet Dominic who is going to be our guide and coordinator for our time here. He runs a very professional business and have all our needs looked after from Singapore to Kuala Rompin and back to Singapore. The food, accommodation, transfers, boats and captains are all taken care of...

When it comes to teasing the Sailfish Dominic is a deft hand at stirring up the sails so they’ll pounce on the fly.

I have never seen so many Sailfish just finning and cruising around in my life. Without any exaggeration I’d say we saw well over a thousand Sails sipping small Anchovies off the surface like a Brown Trout sipping dries. Absolutely amazing to see...

Like all great trips they must come to an end so it’s back to the real world... We headed home – fed, watered and thoroughly stretched.

We are all keen to get back next season and it cannot come around quick enough.
