Kiritimati (Christmas) Island - Open for Business

We recently recieved a very welcome email from the Kiribati National Tourism Office:

Attention all Fishermen, Bird Watchers and Surfers
Kiritimati (Christmas) Island in Kiribati is
Open for Business

The Kiribati National Tourism Office is pleased to inform you of the recommencement of regular flights into Kiritimati (Christmas) in the Republic of Kiribati.

Flights from both Nadi and Honolulu will shortly be open for bookings and the first flight will take off pending approvals on the 25th May 2010.
It has been a difficult time for residents and tourism operators of Kiritimati (Christmas), and they are looking forward to welcoming back many visitors to the island.

Flight times have been maintained, similar to those of the previous Air Pacific operation into Kiritimati (Christmas) Island and we are hoping that fishermen, birdwatchers and surfers alike will make the trek to Christmas Island soon.

Kiritimati (Christmas) Island has some of the world’s best saltwater fly fishing flats and after a 20 month layoff we are confident that there will be plenty of fish to be found and many great fights to be had as you try and bring in the world's best fighting fish, the Kiritimati Island Bone Fish.

Christmas Island LagoonChristmas Island
- Kiritimati Island -
Republic of Kiribati

The largest coral atoll in the world, located in the Line Islands Group just 230km above the equator, Christmas Island enjoys predominately easterly breezes keeping the temperatures at around 26-30ºc.

The island is one of the world's great sea bird sanctuaries with 18 species identified & estimated 6 million birds using the atoll as a breeding site. The lagoon hosts a dazzling array of marine life.

The Fishing

Christmas IslandWith endless white flats as far as the eye can see...
Christmas Island is as close as you can get to utopia for the sight casting junkie...

Christmas Island is blessed with consistent year-round weather making it one of the world’s best year-round fisheries. The bonefish, also known as “phantom” or “gray ghost”, is pound for pound one of the strongest and fastest running saltwater fish. They can attain speeds of over 20 miles per hour – their initial runs are devastatingly fast! In addition to bonefish, there are several species of trevally, wahoo, tuna and many reef species. The giant trevally can be as big as 100lb – however the trevally are more commonly in the 5 to 50lb range – still with a very impressive surface strike!

The Boats

Christmas Island OutfittersChristmas Island Outfitters are a small, personalized operation. By design, they have limited their program to no more than eight anglers per week. They have two outrigger style boats and one centre console boat.

The Accommodation

Located on a secluded section of beach, the clean & simple private bungalows have ample room to sleep two Christmas Island Outfittersanglers in each. Each is equipped with:

  • Bath & shower;
  • Ceiling fans;
  • Screened windows;
  • Refrigerator;
  • Table with chairs.

 Meals are a simple combination of Island style and Western fare guaranteed to satisfy the appetite of hungry anglers.

The Guides

Christmas Island BonefishChristmas Island Outfitters head guide is Peter Kairaio. Peter is recognized as one of the Island’s top guides and he will be joined by a small group of hand picked professionals who are amongst the islands most skilled and personable guides. All have excellent eyes for spotting fish, calm temperaments under the pressure of sight fishing and are skilled instructors.

The lodge boasts a highly flexible fishing program that can take full advantage of varying tides and fishing conditions. Each evening Peter will lead a discussion on the program for the following day’s fishing based on the conditions at hand. It is likely that your departure time from the lodge will vary each morning according to the tides and where you will be fishing.
