Home Fly Tying Saltwater Flies Cut Bait Fly - Pillie Head
Cut Bait Fly - Pillie Head PDF Print E-mail

In the world of Saltwater Fly Fishing the rules & ideas of fly fishing are a little grey sometimes especially when you start talking about catching Yellowfin & Dogtooth and the like on fly. My thoughts on this rather controversial subject are that in all cases you need to get the fly to where the fish are to stand a chance of getting an eat.
Some anglers will argue that the only true fly fishing is when you cast a #20 Blue Olive Dun to a rising trout and in some places this may be right…….but we don’t have trout in Queensland so we had to make our own fun.
We found a lot of fun catching things that would pull a trout inside out using our fly rods and we still had to match the hatch………so to speak. Like I said this is where it gets a little hazy as to whether this is a method of fly fishing because the hatch we are matching is a cut piece of pilchard used for making a cube trail to attract yellowfin etc. within casting range.
The reality is that the respected methods of using the fly will not work in these situations as the fish are keyed into the cube trail and that’s what you have to use.
Read on and learn how you can very easily copy a Pillie head and catch your first Yellowfin.

Materials:

Hook - Owner SSW
Thread - White Flat Wax
Weight - 0.035 Lead Wire
Body - Easy Body Braid
O/Body - Streamer Hair in colours to suit
Eyes - 3D Stick on Eyes
Markings
- Artline Marker
Glue - Softex

Step 1.

Put the hook in the vice and lay a bed of thread on the shank

Step 2.

Wrap some .035 lead wire on the shank & cover with thread and glue

Step 3.

Tie in a piece (length of hook shank )of EZ Body tube at the start of the bend of the hook.

Step 4.

Pull the braid back and tie it off behind the hook eye. This will form a balloon.

Step 5.

Rotate the hook upside down and tie in a decent bunch of White Streamer Hair and press down on the clump to spread it evenly around the bottom half of the hook to form the belly of the fly.

Step 6.

Rotate the hook upright again and tie in a bunch of lavender Streamer Hair on the top of the hook and press down with your thumb to evenly distribute the hair around the top of the fly. Your hook should be completely surrounded now.

Step 7.

Tie directly on top a bunch of Royal Blue Streamer Hair.

Step 8.

Add 3D Stick on Eyes to suit

Step 9.

Coat front section of fly and over the eyes with Softex.

Step 10.

Fray out the tail of the fly and  with a permanent marker pen and your imagination color your fly to deceive.

This fly can be tied on any sized hook to suit the berley and you’ll catch anything in a berley trail from Bream to Yellowfin. So always be ready... you never know what will turn up in your berley trail.
