This is a really good fly quite at home in any puddle – be it saltwater or fresh. It’s basically a caricature of something living. The secret is the fur over the wing as this gives the fly action even when it’s not moving.
It can be tied in many colours – white and red (pictured), black/purple, black/red, olive/green. Basically the same colours in the salt as well as the fresh water. It is effective in any part of the water column.
Tie a bunch of these no matter where you’re going to fish. Keep them hidden away as your mate will steal some when he sees how many fish you’re catching with them.
Materials:
Hook – Mustad C47S D #1/0, #2, #4 Thread – GSP Thread Body – Estaz Wing – Bucktail, Zonker and Krystal Flash Eyes – Bead Chain Tying Instructions:
Step 1
Lay a bed of thread on the shank of the hook
from behind the eye of the hook to a point just around the bend and
back to a point 1½ hook eyes behind the eye of the hook. |
| Step 2
Secure Bead Chain Eyes about 1½ hook eyes
back from the hook eye. Do this with a series of figure of eights –
under the hook shank and diagonally over the eyes, then unders &
overs to tighten the figure eights – under the eyes and diagonally over
the eyes. Approximately 10 of each staggered.
| | Step 3
Tie in a short length of Estaz Chenille
behind the eyes and tie back around the hook bend. Move thread forward
and stop in front of the eyes. Wind the Estaz up to behind the eyes and
tie off in front with 4 wraps only.
| | Step 4
Cut a small bunch of brown hair off the back
of a White Bucktail. Hand stack or use a stacking tube to neaten the
tips. Measure the small bunch so it can be tied in between the eye of
the hook and the bead chain and extend no further behind the hook that
the gap of the hook. This measurement is very important to stop tail
wrapping.
| | Step 5
Cut three strands of Krystal Flash and
double around the thread and tie in over the wing. Next cut a small
clump of Zonker or fine fur and tie in over the Krystal Flash &
Bucktail. This fur will only hang back as far as the bend. Tie off and
the fly is finished ready for gluing.
