3D Profile Fly PDF Print E-mail

3D Profile FlyThe 3D Profile Fly is very good to use for tailor, trevally, mackerel, barramundi and any fish that eats a small mullet, whiting or other small fodder fish.

This fly can be fished on everything from a floating line to a sinking line.

When fishing this fly off a sinking line, it is important to tie this fly out of a very course nylon material so that it will dispel air quickly and sink with the fly line.

If the nylon material is too thin and fluffy, it will hold air and will be held up in the water column as the line sinks.

Materials:

Hook - Gamakatsu SL12S #2 - #6/0
Thread - Mono thread
Eyes - 3D Hologram eyes, size to suit
Wing - #2 Deadly Dazzle or # 1/0 up Steve Farrar’s Flash Blend
Coating - Thinned Silicone

Tying Instructions:

Step 1

Lay a bed of thread the length of the shank and tie in a small bundle of Flash Fibre in at the end of the shank, by doubling over the flash fibre and tying back to lock the fibres into place so they cannot be pulled out. The length should be at least 2 hook lengths behind the hook.

Step 2

Turn the fly upside down and advance the thread to a point just forward of the middle of the shank of the hook and tie in the same amount under the shank to form the belly of the fly. Tie this in doubled around the thread and tied back to the middle of the hook shank. This piece should hang back to a point about the middle of the tail section in step 1.

Step 3

Advance the thread forward to point ¼ of the hook shank back from the eye of the hook. Repeat step 2 but on top of the hook shank.

Step 4

Advance the thread to right behind the eye of the hook and repeat step 1 on top and underneath the shank of the hook. Always doubling the Flash Fibre around the thread so no material can be pulled out of the fly (most important).

Step 5

Whip finish the fly and position the eyes so that they are above the center line of the fly by the bottom of the eye being level with the hook shank.

Step 6

Thin out some silicone with Lighter Fluid and coat the outer fibres lightly with the thinned silicone so the eyes are covered as well. Silicone back nearly as far as the bend so the fly will not tail wrap. Allow a couple of hours to dry and then apply a second coat. You can use a marker pen to add stripes etc to make the fly come alive and look awesome.

Next Day – coat the silicone with Hard as Nails to stop it from being sticky.

Colours that work well:

•    White Belly/Light Blue and Grey Top
•    White/Chartreuse and Olive Top
•    All Pink with extra Pearl Flash
•    All Chartreuse with extra Pearl Flash

You can use a variety of materials to tie this pattern such as Bucktail or Streamer Hair.

Tied in Bucktail, Bob Popovich calls this a Bucktail Deceiver.
When tied in Streamer Hair, he calls it simply 3D.

This is a fun fly to tie and I hope you enjoy hucking them around your local waterway.
