Gavin Platz

Gavin PlatzGavin Platz is an internationally recognised certified casting instructor with the Federation of Fly Fishers and was the first saltwater fly fisherman in Australia to receive this distinction. He is an international guide and operates his service from his base on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Over the years, he has fished in locations we all recognise and others we have never heard of, and has guided for some of the most well respected fly fishing personalities including Billy and Jodi Pate, Jack Samson, Cam Sigler and local Australian identities such as Steve Starling.

His knowledge of salt water fly fishing is second to none. He is an exhibition fly tyer and is regularly invited to make presentations to fishing clubs, schools and corporate groups on a range of salt water fly fishing topics. He is on the G Loomis Pro-Staff team. Gavin also contributes articles to a number of national and state fishing publications.

TESTIMONIAL

Brian Weatherhead
Brian Weatherhead - April 2006

Captain Gav can spot a tuna school at 20 miles [nautical!].

He put me over more fish than I could count and failure to hook up every time was the fault of my poor casting rather than his masterly boatmanship. He does casting lessons too.

Good bloke and I'm planning to book in at least once, if not twice, next year.

Brian Weatherhead, New Zealand

Derek 'Del' Barker

Derek is the newest member of the Tie 'n' Fly team. For the past 11 years he has worked in the Super Yacht Industry, extensively travelling the world's oceans. Derek is a commercially endorsed MCA Master 3000 GRT, Unlimited captain and rates having circumnavigated the world as one of his yachting highlights.

At the age of 5 Derek was taught to fly fish by his grandfather on their family farm in the foothills of the Drakensberg, Kwa-Zulu Natal. His passion for fly fishing has grown steadily since! Being surround by salt water 24/7, it was obvious that saltwater fly fishing would be the logical next step.

Derek's work has allowed him the extraordinary opportunity to fish in a number of exotic locations. He has been privileged to fish in the Seychelles for bonefish, GT’s, permit and milkies; Costa Rica for sails, roosterfish and crevalle jacks; the Maldives for GT’s, the Caribbean for juvenile tarpon, bonefish and king mackerel, Florida for monster tarpon and Cape Town for giant yellowfin tuna.

Tying his own flies is another of Del's passions and he believes that nothing beats fooling a fish with something you have created!

Marné Prinsloo

Marné PrinslooMarné Prinsloo is another one of the newer additions to the Tie 'n' Fly Team. He was born in South Africa and moved to Australia in 2003. He's the younger brother of N.C. and is also an avid fisherman.

He started fishing in South Africa, targeting species such as tilapia and yellow fish. He has been hooked ever since he can remember. Salt water fishing started in late 2003 for Marné. He started out, as many have, with bait fishing; progressed into lure fishing and has now joined the elite group of fly fishers.

He has experience in driving small boats and fishes often with his family.

Judy Glover

Judy GloverJudy is the one to talk to about bookkeeping and admin matters.

She is a 5th generation Caloundra girl (almost a local...) who has fished (bait fished, dare I utter the words!!) most of her life.

She is currently learning the fine art of fly fishing and caught this 95cm Queenfish on her first trip to Cape York on the Mantaray.

Since then her species tally has risen to around 15 - yet to land her first Longtail Tuna!

N.C. Prinsloo

NC_PrinslooUPDATE - N.C. has once again spread his wings and is currently teaching English in Korea... He is missing the saltwater and says the trout over there just aren't the same...

N.C. joined the Tie 'n' Fly Outfitters team in August 2007.

Born in South Africa, his obsession with fishing started at the tender young age of just five years old.

Both of his parents are mad keen fisherpeople too... so there has been plenty of encouragement from home. They mostly fished the freshwater of the Vaal River (for Yellowfish and Carp) and the Crocodile River in Mpumalanga Province for Tiger Fish.

He began fly fishing at around 12 years of age, fishing for Trout in the Badplaas area. His passion for saltwater fly fishing began when his family immigrated to Australia in 2003.

Now settled here on the Sunshine Coast, N.C. and his family still spend their leisure time fishing our oceans, rivers and impoundments.
